Jack Nesser (b. 2005) is a musical artist based in Indianapolis, IN. Known for his evocative, programmatic compositions and passionate piccolo playing, Jack's craft has been recognized internationally. He began his compositional career at the age of 15 with the premiere of his work, To New Beginnings, with the Terre Haute Community Band which later won the 1st annual Heidelberg University Honor Band Call for Scores. Recently, Jack has been commissioned by the OTR Saxophone Quartet, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra League and Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and has worked with collaborators such as writer Ashley Mack-Jackson and the JCA Composer's Orchestra.
This year, he was selected to be the piccoloist of the WASBE Youth Wind Orchestra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as an attendee at the Creative Music Intensive hosted by the Bergamot Quartet and Arts Letters and Numbers. As an advocator of new music, he is currently hosting a new music for piccolo call for scores in partnership with Sound Ecologies to diversify the piccolo repertoire. As Jack continues to develop his musical language, he actively seeks new creative opportunities to create music which resonates with his values: social justice, sustainability, curiosity, wonder, and freedom.
Jack is currently attending Butler University, earning a BM in Music Composition with an emphasis in piccolo performance. At Butler, Jack is a member of the Wind Ensemble, Morton Finney Diversity Scholars Program, and actively collaborates with numerous artists on campus. His previous and current instructors include Cait Nishimura, Dr. Michael Schelle, and Dr. Frank Felice for composition, and Dr. Angela Reynolds, Alistair Howlett* & Rebecca Price Arrensen* for flute/piccolo. Outside of music, Jack is passionate about supporting small businesses and artists, spirituality, and DIY-ing just about anything he can. If he isn't practicing or composing, you can catch Jack crafting, watching Golden Girls, or listening to his favorite artists.
